The Hill reports that Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook argues that immigration is one of the biggest civil rights issues of our time. He is right. The Declaration of Independence proclaims “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” To keep over ten million people in the shadows, denying them full protection of their unalienable rights is a one of the largest scale acts of injustice being perpetrated today.
“Zuckerberg, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Dropbox CEO Andrew Houston were on hand to help kick off a “hackathon” event at LinkedIn’s headquarters, where a group of 20 young immigrants who came to the country illegally as children, often called “Dreamers,” will spend the next 25 hours coding Web tools aimed at advocating for immigration reform… By highlighting the stories of the tech savvy “Dreamers” and the struggles they’ve faced because of their illegal status, the group, which counts Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt as contributors, is aiming to convince on-the-fence House Republicans that giving these young immigrants an avenue toward citizenship is good for the economy, and in alignment with the country’s history.”
These Dreamers are Americans in the deepest sense of the world, and their dreams are an integral part of the American dream – and so are the dreams of their fathers and mothers. These folks have been Americans in spirit, it is time they become Americans in law.”
